3) How would you summarize the book to the person you are sharing it with?
Basically, it’s a non-believers account about what happened during Jesus Christ’s final hours as he, the non-believer, attempts to disprove Christ’s divinity.

4) How old were you when you read it?
20.

5) Where were you at in your life, during that time?
I was serving a mission in Idaho.

6) How did it influence your life then?
It gave me a different perspective, from a non-believers point of view, and taught me to look at life from multiple viewpoints.

7) What would you add as a word of encouragement or message of hope within the cover the book?
We learn to judge each other so quickly. Take the time to respect and get to know one another. Then you’ll realize we are all unique parts of a special Family.

The Confidence Man is a deeply subversive work. It suggests that you are not able to believe or comprehend what Jesus Christ taught you.
Me: “How would you define ‘subversive’?”
Keith: “Subversive is that which undercuts accepted societal norms.”

36.

5) Where were you at in your life, during that time?
I had gone back to school and was in graduate school at UTEP.

6) How did it influence your life then?
It made me a lot more self-conscious and conscious of the teachings of Jesus. It challenged my being and the essence of everything.

7) What would you add as a word of encouragement or message of hope within the cover the book?

I first read this when I was 12 and felt “F--- You Walt!” The next time I read it when was when I was 36 and now declared “F--- You society!”

A fairly new Christian, submerged in ministry duties facing a lot of attacks on my faith.

It awoke me to stop passing judgment on others whose life was not like mine.

This book answered a lot of questions, changed the way I see the world, interact with others, and view God. I hope it will do the same for you. You are fearfully & wonderfully made.

A classic story of childhood wonder, honor, and integrity.

Maybe 14. I was a freshman in high school.

I was in a better place than where I would be a little later in my life. I had good friends, was involved in positive activities, and enjoyed life.

It set an example of what it is to be honorable and courageous.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.

All science and knowledge is lost and “I” no longer exists. A man rediscovers how to think for himself and challenges a society where all is stale and lifeless.

12 or 13.

5) Where were you at in your life, during that time?
I was a total mess. My father was someone to be feared and I was living with my Grandparents while my family was breaking up. It was a pretty rough time in my life.

6) How did it influence your life then?
It further divided me, intellectually, from my group of friends. I tried to explain it to my friends, who didn’t get it, and even tried to get my girlfriend to read it, to no avail.

Physically in California, Long Beach. I was dating my girlfriend who would become my wife.

It helped me learn to take life in stride.

Treat others as you want to be treated and use lots of ‘please’ and ‘thank you’s.

It was the summer before 7th grade and I was in love with reading.

The main character was a girl about my age, that I could relate to, and the hero. I loved that you could apply the elements of fantasy to real life.

At 14, although I didn’t really get it, and again at 43, when I really got it.

I had been at the height of my life just prior to falling to my lowest.

Reading it forced me to deal with my own life. Before I had just been on autopilot. It spoke to me to forgive and move forward with Love in my life.

No matter what people see or what people think, you are a free soul and, with an open mind, can better this corrupt world.

It’s 4 short stories that are different and better than the movie.

20.

5) Where were you at in your life, during that time?
I was in the Marine Corps’ on a LST flat bottom, looking to pass time.

6) How did it influence your life then?
The weird thing is, I felt proud. I had picked up a book and finished reading it; and I enjoyed it! ‘King’ was the ‘hook’ that drew me into the world of reading. Until then I had got by using Cliff Notes for school projects.

7) What would you add as a word of encouragement or message of hope within the cover the book?
The enjoyment and satisfaction of reading a book has changed my life.

Just starting a new job, feeling lost in my family life and disconnected from God.

It changed the way I thought about God, His role in my life, and helped me to see life from a wider view.  Helped me to understand why bad things happen in life, and how both those things can work for our good.

God loves us my friend. Even when it feels like no one is there, He is there.  What is happening in your life? Find him there, and He'll see you through.

A really unique coming off age story that doesn’t sugar coat life.

At 15 while in high school and again in my 40’s.

I was not in a good relationship and was facing a lot of struggles. Reading about another’s challenges was a good place for me to go.

6) How did it influence your life then?
In general, reading gave me an escape and opened a world of knowledge. It allowed me to get lost in the pages of a book and experience a positive voice in my life.

It’s about a gentleman who gets leprosy, loses the ability to feel, and is abandoned by his friends and family.  He’s magically transported to a land where he is cured of his leprosy, regains feeling, and is recognized as a reincarnated Lord and Savior. He commits a crime, because he can feel again, and changes the whole of the magical world.

I was just a high school student going through normal teenage things.

It taught me to treat the World with intentional kindness.

It’s about a guy born in space, raised by Martians, who comes back to Earth with profound intuitiveness and psychic powers. It is kind of like a Christ story.

16 years old the first time; but I’ve read, reread, and reread it again throughout my life.

5) Where were you at in your life, during that time?
I was in high school and had just moved to Canada.

6) How did it influence your life then?
As a ‘stranger’, in the ‘strange land’ of Canada, it gave me a more positive outlook on life. I could identify with the challenges of being an outsider.
